Research Symposium, Malawi

Bingu International Conference Center (BICC)

30 August 2018
8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

UNICEF, in collaboration with UNICEF’s Swiss National Committee and the Swiss Development Agency, formalized a 30-year research partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. The objective of the partnership is to align the research interests of the University with the research agenda and program design interests of UNICEF in social norms and resilience.

To operationalize the partnership, the University of Zurich established the Center for Child Well-being and Development (CCWD) with a professorship to direct and coordinate the re-search partnership.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SYMPOSIUM: The two-day research Symposium is the first of its kind to be organized in Malawi as part of this collaboration. The prime objective of the event is to share knowledge from research on child wellbeing and development, featuring rigorous research from RCT as well as longitudinal studies. The latter is particularly important as the University and UNICEF plan to embark on an 18-year longitudinal panel study from 2019.

APPROACH: The Symposium combines plenary and parallel (small group) sessions. The parallel sessions consist of presentation of research papers on child development by scholars from Switzerland and African Universities in addition to the presentation of the preliminary findings of the nationally representative Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) Survey conducted in Malawi in 2018 as well as the research project called parents’ future-orientation and investments in children. Lectures by Professor Fehr on behavioral economics and Professor Lichand’s lecture on technology are the key features of the Symposium.

AUDIENCE: UNICEF, Government, development partners, academia, civil society, international invitees.

The field-trip to Malawi was also fruitful for CCWD team members to pilot research projects in the Kasungu area.
